Configuring Irrigation Zones

To add an irrigation zone, navigate to the Zones and Schedules page in your Hydrawise account.

From there, you can configure your Irrigation Zones and set Program Start Times.

Setting Up Irrigation Zones

To change an existing Irrigation Zone, click on the edit button at the bottom of the zone. The details will be displayed for you to edit.

To add a new irrigation zone, click Add a New Zone.

To remove an irrigation zone, click the trash-can icon below the zone.

Each irrigation zone has the following properties:

Zone Name Use a meaningful name for each irrigation zone. Zone names are displayed on the Hydrawise controller and are used in your Hydrawise account to show run times and allow manual modification of watering schedules.
Zone Number The zone number for each irrigation zone should match the number you have used when wiring the controller.
Zone Icon This is the icon that displays next to each zone.
Watering Type Select either Smart Watering or Time-Based Predictive Watering.

Depending on the type of watering you choose, different properties will be available.

Cycle and Soak Cycle and Soak is the ability to break the watering time for a zone into periods of watering (cycle) and pause (soak). This allows water to soak into the soil without runoff. You can enable or disable Cycle and Soak. If you enable it, you will need to specify the cycle and soak periods.
  • Cycle Time is the maximum number of minutes for which the zone can run.
  • Soak Time is the minimum time between zone watering to allow the water to soak into the soil.

A master zone (also known as a pump start) can also be configured. A master zone is a zone that turns on when any other zone is active; this can be used to start a water pump, for example. By default, no master zone is defined. More details are available in Configuring a Master Zone.

Smart Watering

Smart Watering is an automated watering schedule that uses information about local environmental conditions to ensure your plants get the optimum amount of water. For more information, see What Is Smart Watering?

Watering Type: Enter Time and Frequency

This option allows you to manually set the watering length and frequency.

Watering Length The number of minutes this zone will run for each time.
Peak Season Watering Frequency How often the zone will normally run during your peak irrigation period. This frequency will be automatically adjusted throughout the year based on actual evaporation and rainfall.

Watering Type: Use a Preconfigured Watering Schedule

This option allows you to add a watering schedule or use one you’ve previously created. If you create a new one, the available fields are:

Run Time The number of minutes this zone will run for each time.
Run Frequency How often this schedule needs to run.
Schedule Adjustment Note: The Schedule Adjustment option in a preconfigured watering schedule is not used for Smart Watering zones.

Time-Based Predictive Watering

Time-Based Predictive Watering allows you to set the watering length and frequency for each zone, as well as any schedule adjustments. If you have a number of zones that will use the same settings, you can define and reuse watering schedules. Watering schedules can be created and applied to multiple zones. This is useful when you have more than one zone that needs the same settings. For example, you may have three lawn zones that all need to water with the same frequency for the same length of time. So, you can set up one watering schedule with those details and apply it to each zone.

Watering Type: Enter Time and Frequency

This option allows you to manually set the watering length and frequency

Watering Length The number of minutes this zone will run for each time
Watering Frequency How often this schedule needs to run
Schedule Adjustment When the day’s forecast or current temperature is above your threshold, you can choose how extra watering occurs.
  • Water More Often When Hot: Waters more often, unless you are using a watering frequency of Every Valid Program Start Time
  • Water Longer When Hot: Will extend the watering time based on the percentage you set in the Watering Triggers
  • Don’t Water Extra When Hot
  • Don’t Modify Schedule
If you are using a watering frequency of Every Valid Program Start Time, watering will occur at each Program Start Time regardless of any schedule modifications set above.

Watering Type: Use a Preconfigured Watering Schedule

This option allows you to add a watering schedule or use one you’ve previously created. If you create a new one, the fields available are:

Run Time The number of minutes this zone will run for each time.
Run Frequency How often this schedule needs to run.
Schedule Adjustment When the day’s forecast or current temperature is above your threshold, you can choose how extra watering is done.
If you are using a watering frequency of Every Valid Program Start Time, watering will occur at each Program Start Time regardless of schedule modifications set above.

Program Start Times

Program start times are the times and days that your controller is permitted to water.

Not all zones will be activated for each of these times. An irrigation zone will only be activated when it isn’t too cold or wet and it hasn’t been watered for longer than the watering frequency that you set.

For example, if you have your permitted watering times set to 9 a.m. each day and you have a zone that is configured to water once a week, then we will only water at 9 a.m. once a week.

To change an existing Watering Time, click on the edit button and the details will display for you to edit. To change a day setting, click on the cell to toggle the day on and off.

To add a new Watering Time, click Add Watering Time and enter the time and the days on which you wish to water.

Each program start time can be made specific to a zone or watering schedule. By default, any Program Start Time can be used by any zone that requires watering. However, you can dedicate any Program Start Time to a specific zone or specific watering schedule.
